Delivery of Ammonia Carrier "GAS INNOVATOR" for Mitsui & Co., Ltd.
IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO Lines) is proud to announce a 23,000m3 ammonia carrier from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (Hyundai Mipo) was delivered and put into service today. On the same day, a naming and delivery ceremony was held at Hyundai Mipo 's Ulsan shipyard. The vessel was named "GAS INNOVATOR" to express the motivation towards the realization of a sustainable society by taking on innovative challenges ahead of the times.

This is the world's first ammonia carrier to be designed and built based on the basic certification of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for ammonia-fuel-ready ship. The vessel is the first environmentally friendly vessel to be built by a Japanese shipping company that can switch to ammonia fuel sometime in the future, which is gaining attention as a zero-emission fuel. The vessel is also equipped with a service that uses AI to recognize and analyze images captured by onboard video cameras to detect unstable conditions (smoke, fire, oil leaks, etc.) and imperfect behavior (failure to wear protective equipment, falling over, falling asleep, etc.) at an early stage, and satellite broadband internet that enables high-speed data communication between land and ship to enhance our safety and improve technological knowledge in this area. Many attempts have been made to increase the sophistication of ship operations and to enable the organization to accumulate and utilize on-site technical knowledge as data.
The vessel will be used to transport ammonia handled by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui) mainly from Southeast Asia to Northeast Asia, especially to Japan, for supplying ammonia to customers mainly in the chemical and fertilizer industries. The vessel will also be engaged in the transport of fuel ammonia to be used in a demonstration project to establish technology to substitute ammonia on a large scale for conventional fuel*³, which JERA CO., Inc. (JERA) and IHI Corporation plan to start in FY2023 at Hekinan Thermal Power Station Unit 4.
For many years, the IINO Group has been engaged in the transportation of liquefied gases such as LPG, ammonia and LNG, based on medium- and long-term contracts with shippers and charterers in Japan and overseas. In the shipping business, we have set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions per ton-mile by 20% by 2030 from the FY2020 level, and the delivery of GAS INNOVATOR paved the way for our further efforts to realize a sustainable low-carbon society.

(*¹)Hyundai Mipo Dockyard
The company is one of the world's leading builders of small and medium-sized gas carriers and tankers, and they built a methanol-fueled chemical tanker in 2019, which IINO Lines and Mitsui jointly placed an order.
(*²)Mitsui & Co., Ltd.
Mitsui holds a track record of global ammonia trading for about 50 years, and have the top share in imports of ammonia into Japan. Based on the strong network of partners in Japan and overseas, Mitsui aims to build a large-scale supply chain for clean ammonia and takes the lead in launching clean ammonia manufacturing businesses around the world, with the initiatives to realize a decarbonized society through a wide variety of industries in each country and region.
(*³)Demonstration project to establish technology to substitute ammonia on a large scale for conventional fuel
A demonstration to convert 20% of fuel to ammonia will start in FY2023 at JERA's Hekinan Thermal Power Plant Unit 4 (power output: 1 GW). This will be the world's first demonstration project to convert fuel to ammonia 20% in a large commercial coal-fired power generator, and will be subsidized by the Act on the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Mitsui and JERA signed a purchase agreement for fuel ammonia to be used in the demonstration test in June 2023.
