History of IINO LINES

The history of IINO LINES can be traced back to when the founder Torakichi Iino began transporting coal by barge at Maizuru Port, Kyoto Prefecture. Despite the curtailment of the business during the Second World War and again as a result of the major consolidation of Japan's shipping industry in , the IINO Group has contributed to livelihoods, industry, and society through two distinct businesses: the Shipping Business focusing on the transport of resources and energy and the Real Estate Business engaged in office leasing.

  • Torakichi Iino founded IINO Shokai in Maizuru, Kyoto, with commencement of transportation of coal by barge and stevedoring.
  • IINO Shoji Kaisha, Ltd. was established as the successor to Iino Shokai with capital of 1 million yen.
  • IINO Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. was established to assume the carriage of goods by sea by IINO Shoji Kaisha, Ltd.
  • TAKATORI MARU No. 1 (1,266 DWT), the Group's first tanker, was delivered.
  • FUJISAN MARU (13,586 DWT), Japan's largest oceangoing tanker, was delivered.
  • IINO Shoji Kaisha, Ltd., merged with IINO Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., and was renamed IINO Kaiun Sangyo Kaisha, Ltd.
  • IINO Kaiun Sangyo Kaisha, Ltd. was renamed IINO KAIUN KAISHA, LTD., the current company name.
  • Head Office moved from Maizuru to Mitsubishinaka Building No. 11, Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
  • TOA MARU left the Port of Yokohama to ship crude oil from Bahrain.
  • The Company's stock was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (By October 1952, it was listed on other domestic stock exchanges, including the Osaka Securities Exchange).
  • RYUHO MARU (14,717 DWT), Japan's first large-scale tanker of the postwar era, was delivered.
  • Liner services opened to Bangkok, India, Pakistan, and New York; IINO LINES moved into operations of liner services.
  • Aquired Chiyoda Land and Building Co.,Ltd.
  • Liner service was opened to Western Australia.
  • IINO LINES increased its capital to 13.2 billion yen.
  • Liner service was opened to Nakhodka. Liner service between North America and Southeast Africa was opened.
  • Liner service opened to the Great Lakes and Canada.
    TOHO MARU, Japan's first pressurized gas carrier for regional shipping, was delivered, and the Company began regional shipping of LPG.
  • Chiyoda Land and Building Co., Ltd. was renamed IINO Fudosan Kaisha Ltd.
  • IINO Building (total floor area: 76,808.82 m2) was completed. The Company's Head Office was moved to this location. IINO Hall began operations.
  • TOYOSU MARU (22,974 DWT), the Group's first LPG ocean tanker, was delivered. Chiyoda Petroleum Co., Ltd. (a joint venture with Nippon Oil Corporation) was established. Began petroleum retailing.
  • The separation of the Liner Service Department was brought about by consolidation in the shipping industry and transferred to IINO Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., which later amalgamated with Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. Since then, focus placed on tankers and tramp cargo shipping operations.
  • After reducing capital to 3.3 billion yen, capital was raised to 4.3 billion yen through a capital increase via third-party allotment with compensation.

  • The Tokyo Sakurada Building (total floor area: 17,762.63m2) was completed.
  • ZENKOREN MARU NO. 5 (57,193 DWT), the Group's first PANAMAX dry bulk carrier, was delivered.

  • INO Marine Service Co., Ltd. was established to conduct ship management operations. In the following year, created Japan's first tanker adopting a system whereby Japanese and foreign crew members worked together aboard.
  • Siberian land bridge container service for Europe began; became co-owner of four container vessels (constructed between 1975 and 1980).
  • The ESPOIR chemical tanker was delivered.
  • Began the Group's first chemical tanker chartering.
  • Completed construction of the Tokyo Fujimi Building (total floor area: 10,674.86 m2).
  • The Company entered into contracts of affreightment (COA) for petrochemical products (loaded in the Middle East, unloaded in the Far East) with Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).

  • IINO Building Maintenance Co., Ltd., forerunner of IINO Building Technology Co., Ltd., was established.
  • Completed construction of the IINO Takehaya Building (total floor area: 4,736.37 m2).
  • LODESTAR ACE, a chemical tanker, was delivered. The Company began direct management and operation of chemical tankers.
  • Participated in the Qatar LNG Project and became co-owner of ten LNG tankers (built between 1996 and 2000).
  • Completed construction of Sasazuka Center Building (total floor area: 11,973.11 m2).
  • Merger with IINO Fudosan.
    IINO Media Pro Co., Ltd. was established to engage in operation of photography studios and design and production of advertising. Hiroo Studio began operations.
  • The Company celebrated its 100th anniversary since its founding.
  • RYUHO MARU (281,050 DWT), the Group's first double hull tanker, was delivered.
  • BLUE ISLAND (152,398 DWT), the Group's first Capesize dry bulk carrier, was delivered.
  • The Group took part in the world's largest methanol production project in Saudi Arabia. (Operation began in 2004.)
  • IINO SINGAPORE PTE. LTD., a Singapore-based subsidiary, was established.
  • Minami Aoyama Studio, a rental photo studio, began operations.
  • SK SUNRISE (75,248 DWT), the Group's first LNG tanker to be managed and owned by the Company, was delivered.
  • Capital raised to 13.092 billion yen through public offering and third-party allotment.
  • Simultaneously obtained ISO9001 and 14001 certifications in the Shipping Business.
    IINO UK LTD., a London-based subsidiary, was established.
    IINO Marine Service Co., Ltd. obtained the Green Award certification.
  • The IINO Building was awarded the 12th BELCA Prize.
  • The Company, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and Qatar Shipping Company Co., Ltd. jointly established QIM TRANSPORT INC.
  • Simultaneously obtained ISO9001 and 14001 certifications in the Office Leasing Business.
  • NORTH PIONEER (1,938 DWT), the Group's first domestic LNG tanker and the second in Japan, was delivered.
  • IINO SINGAPORE PTE. LTD. began operation of chemical tankers.
  • Completed construction of the Shiodome Shiba-Rikyu Building (total floor area: 32,702.37 m2).
